In 1951, Hugh Brecknell started a 5-year stonemasonry apprenticeship with Queensland's largest stonemasons at that time, PJ Lowther & Son, at Bowen Bridge.

The company specialized in supplying stone products to monument retailers around Queensland, and granite, marble, and sandstone to the building industry, hence the name 'Monumental and Masonry Supplies'.
In the early 80's, following the trends from Europe and America, granite benchtops started to become popular in Australia, so the company created a new division to cater to that market.

Hugh was elected as the president of the International Monument Federation from 1988 to 1990. This honorary position gave him the opportunity to see and understand the Stone Industry worldwide.
So, our company has a strong history in the stonemasonry industry, not just here in Queensland, but on the world stage. We are unashamedly enthusiastic advocates of natural stone. It's in our company's DNA.
Hugh and Val Brecknell are now retired but still take an active interest in the family company.
The company is now run by the brother and sister team of Cliff Brecknell and Kaye Maas.
